Embrace the Replenishing Energy of the Season

Life is cyclical, offering numerous symbolic opportunities for fresh beginnings. Recently, as I scrolled through my newsfeed, vibrant celebrations marking the Lunar New Year—the Year of the Dragon—across East Asian cultures caught my attention. The Lunar New Year signifies a time of cleansing, renewal, and the infusion of auspicious energies for the year ahead. It’s a moment to bid farewell to the old, embrace the new, and set intentions for growth and prosperity.

I found myself reflecting on my own experiences during times of transition. Specifically, I pondered the transition that occurs on December 31st/January 1st for those of us who follow the Gregorian calendar. While the notions of cleansing, renewal, growth, and prosperity sound enticing, what happens when January doesn’t bring about the anticipated sense of freshness and optimistic momentum forward?

Just recently, during a heartfelt conversation with a colleague, she opened up about her struggles with a lingering sense of “undoneness.” She confided in me about the tasks from the previous year that remained unfinished, leaving her feeling unmotivated as she faced the new year. As I listened empathetically, her words resonated deeply with me, evoking memories of my own encounters with the familiar tug between the lethargy that often accompanies late winter and societal pressure to accomplish great feats and launch into a brand new year.

I expressed my gratitude to her for sharing these feelings, reassuring her that her experience was entirely valid and understandable. In sharing my perspective, I reflected on the invaluable insights I’ve gained from a multitude of wellness practitioners, each imparting knowledge from various wisdom traditions. It’s through their teachings that I’ve come to believe that the energy of winter is one of rest and repair—a period of hibernation and replenishment observed in the natural world around us at this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere. If our mind is cluttered with thoughts of unfinished tasks, weighed down by past expectations or lingering feelings of inadequacy, it would be expected that transitioning into the next year, along with the expectation for accomplishing great things would feel uninviting, if not downright overwhelming—particularly following a hectic holiday season.

There are numerous wisdom traditions from around the world that offer valuable insights into living in harmony with the seasons and the cycles of nature. In Celtic tradition, for instance, spring emerges as a time of profound significance—a season of rebirth, renewal, and awakening in the natural world. With each passing day, as sunlight lingers longer and the earth begins to thaw, spring heralds the return of life and vitality following the cold and darkness of winter. The Gaelic festival of Imbolc, celebrated at the beginning of February in the Northern Hemisphere, honors this renewal. This festival marks the midpoint, known as the cross-quarter day, between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Imbolc symbolizes the earth’s awakening and the lengthening of daylight hours—a poignant moment of transition and transformation.

Drawing wisdom from these time-honored traditions and cultural perspectives is not merely an intellectual pursuit; it’s a pathway to nurturing the well-being of our spirit. By embracing and learning from these teachings, we cultivate a deeper sense of connectedness with the natural world, fostering a profound reverence for and connection with all that surrounds us.

As I chatted with my colleague, I realized that these conversations of depletion during the beginning of the year are all too common among the women in my circle. It dawned on me that our shared experiences and challenges could be the very foundation of a program tailored to support those navigating life’s transitions.

Prioritizing rest and releasing what no longer serves you will equip you for the vibrant energy ahead. Balancing your mind, body, and spirit is essential for your overall well-being. Below, I offer some ideas to kickstart your journey toward replenishment.

Replenishment for the Body:

  • Prioritize rest by taking regular breaks or creating a nighttime wind-down routine.
  • Incorporate gentle movement like stretching, yoga, or Qigong into your day.
  • Drink warm & detoxifying beverages, such as warm water with fresh lemon or dandelion tea.

Replenishment for the Mind:

  • Carve out time for quiet moments for reflection.
  • Give yourself permission to reexamine your task list and let go of things that no longer align with your priorities and values.
  • Limit time on electronic devices at least two hours before you go to sleep.

Replenishment for the Spirit:

  • Add a gratitude practice into your day.
  • Close your eyes and listen to your favorite sounds from nature.
  • Perform a cleansing ritual, such as smudging with sage, to clear stagnant energy and create space for new growth and possibilities.
